Showcase: Resources

Like the gameplay in most other Real-Time Strategy game, our game utilizes resources as the basis for the player's economy. Different structures and different units will cost differing amounts of resources in order to construct or to train them. The challenge for the player will be to secure these resources before the enemy does. Resources are finite in 0 A.D..

The five main resources in the game are as follows:
Food - Gather food by hunting wild animals, picking berries, herding domesticated animals, or through various farming methods.
Wood - Gather wood by chopping down trees. Most maps will be littered with forests. This is probably the most abundant resource available to all players.
Stone - Gather stone by mining large rock deposits.
Metal - This resource represents the various metals utilized by ancient civilisations. These metals include Gold, Silver, Tin, Iron, and Copper. Mine this resource at large ore deposits. This will most likely be the least abundant resource available and will be hotly fought over by all players.
Population - Each unit costs population (pop). Gain more population room by building houses and by capturing more territories. All infantry units cost 1 pop each. All Cavalry units cost 2 pop slots each. Chariot and Elephant units will cost 3 pop to represent the riders and mounts.
In order to gather a resource (except for hunting) there must be a resource collection building nearby. For food stuffs that is the Farmstead structure; and for Wood and Mineral types of resources that building is the Mill structure. These structures, as well as the Civilisation Centre, have an "aura" radius that allows units to gather within a certain distance from the structure. When a unit ventures beyond this aura, then resource collection ceases and a new Mill or Farmstead must be constructed closer to the resource being gathered. This is most applicable when chopping Wood.

The Market structure will also be a very important building for the player's economy

Unit Showcase: Indian War Elephant

The Indian War Elephant is one of two Super Units for the Persian Civilisation (the other is the Persian Anusiya). These behemoths are slow and powerful, consequently taking a long time to train and costing large amounts of resources. They will deal a large amount of trample damage and dish out a high crush attack, making them good against massed enemy units and buildings. They also have a Stench Aura that causes enemy cavalry units to lose attack strength. While utilizing Indian War Elephants effectively will be a boon to the Persians player, a significant drawback will be the Run Amok feature: when an elephant unit takes a large amount of damage the player will lose control of the elephant and it will attack any nearby unit, friend or foe, until it is finally brought down or healed back to sufficient strength.

In short the Indian War Elephant will be pound-for-pound the strongest unit in the game, but must be used with care, lest they become more a liability than an asset.

Unit Showcase: Liby-Phoenician Pikemen

Liby-Phoenician Pikemen were the backbone of many Carthaginian armies throughout the 3rd and 2nd Centuries BC. These men were a mix of indigenous Libyan peoples and Phoenician colonists and were intensely loyal to their capital city of Carthage. Influenced by the Greek Hellenistic kingdoms and by its conflict with the Greek kingdom of Epirus, Carthage armed their Liby-Phoenician soldiers in the Macedonian style, with Hellenistic helmets, small shield, cuirass, greaves, and long pike.

They went on to participate in many of the major engagements between the Carthaginians and their rivals from Italia and Sicilia and soon developed a reputation for ruggedness and steadfastness.

These soldiers will be the main anti-cavalry unit for Carthaginian player as well one of the three citizen-soldiers available to the player from the start of the game.

The Vale of Tempe

The Tempe Pass is a strategic pass in Greece since it is the main route from Larisa through the mountains to the coast. Because of this it has been the scene of numerous battles throughout history. However, it can be bypassed from the Sarantoporo Pass with which does take longer. In 480 BC 10,000 Athenians and Spartans tried to stop Xerxes's invasion, but the Persians bypassed the Greek force by marching through Sarantoporo. During the Third Macedonian War in 164 BC the Romans broke through Perseus of Macedon's defenses and later defeated him in the battle of Pydna. During the revolution of Andriskos in 148 BC the valley was the site of another conflict. There were other battles fought there during the barbarian raids that mark the end of the Roman era in Greece and then later in Byzantine and Ottoman times.

The scene in this screenshot depicts the Spartan and Athenian commanders (along with their entourage) deciding to abandon their position at the mouth of the Vale.

Elite Triarii

Each standard line unit has three levels of experience: Basic -> Advanced -> Elite. This is the Elite Upgrade for the Triarius (the Basic Triarius is here). He has the most experience, best armor, and most lethal weaponry of any standard Roman infantry.

The Triarii were veterans of military service, usually in their 30s or 40s, with money to afford the best weapons and equipment. They made up the third line of heavy infantry, armed with stabbing spears. If the Hastati and Principi could not defeat the enemy, the Triari would come forward and finish them off. Usually they didn't have to fight.

Marcus Claudius Marcellus

Marcus Claudius Marcellus, 268 - 208 BC, a soldier of the first war with Carthage, a hero of the Second Punic War, and victor over the Gauls at Clastidium. Plutarch describes him as a man of war, strong in body and constitution, with an iron will to fight on. As a general he was immensely capable, standing alongside Scipio Africanus and Claudius Nero as the most effective Roman generals of the entire Second Punic War. In addition to his military achievements Marcellus was a fan of Greek culture and arts, which he enthusiastically promoted in Rome. He met his demise when his men were ambushed near Venusia.

But above all Marcellus was widely known as a physical combatant, once having covered his injured brother with his own shield while killing every opponent that approached. Another significant feat of arms was performed at the Battle of Clastidium where he personally fought and defeated the Insubrian chief Viridomarus, also in 0 AD. For this act and the capture of Viridomarus' armor and weapons Marcellus was granted the prestigious award of "spoila opima". This award was given to Roman commandes who succeeded in personally killing the opposing general in hand-to-hand combat and stripping the enemy of his arms and equipment in the Homeric tradition. Marcellus was one of only three men, traditionally including Romulus himself, to have been granted this honor in the entire history of Rome, of which he was the last to be so honored.

In honor of the respect the people held for him, Marcellus was granted the title of "Sword of Rome".
