Kicking it Old School

It seems today that developers of the mod community are putting all their effort to create what they believe will compete with professionally funded developers. If you look at a list of mods right now I can guarantee that at least 70% of them are trying to create the next Half-Life 2 or Halo. As a mod journalist, I've been growing very very tired of this trend and have been itching for something that is simply fun. I know complex and visual features are a bonus but what we're dying for is something that will keep us occupied for more than a short 5 minutes. This has been an issue that has stressed me out with the community and has further pulled me away.

While browsing around Shacknews, I by chance read a post by CrustaR who at the time had just released a demo of his Doom 3 mod titled, Zombie Slayer. For those of you that don't know, I'm very attached to Shacknews, and there are tons of great people there who work with games one way or another. Anyway, so I had to know what this mod was. I have to admit, i was a little skeptical at first because of the amount of zombie games being released, but soon learned it was different from anything I have played in a long time.

The objective of the mod is to escape from a horde of zombies, simply by pushing the right button at the right time, similar to the old laserdisc games from the 80's. If the player does not perform the actions at the right time, the different scenarios will trigger different events. Unfortunately, the demo is very short and will probably only keep you playing for about 10 minutes, though, CrustaR is currently hard at work in getting the project done for a summer release. I will post an interview session I had with him shortly.
