With 93 different player models to choose from in multiplayer you may have a little trouble coming to a decision. (Note: the model icons are only present if you download the optional Shifter texture pack)

Fun with Combat Knives

Now that you can carry 6 Combat Knives at once and throw each of them there are dozens of little maneuvers you can pull off. This one, however, caught me by surprise. Apparently if you aim just right you can block the laser from an alarm tripwire with a thrown Combat Knife. Unfortunately I'm told it tends to set off the alarm; still, cool all the same.
Compatibility with other mods (Zodiac)

As you can see from this screenshot, Shifter is fully compatible with Zodiac. Three Grays killed with Zodiac's custom weapon, the E-Rifle, and three skill point bonuses awarded, one for each kill. [Image captured by JC Fenix (gfaqs: JC_Phoenix)]

Plasma Rifle Alt-Fire

One of the first weapons to get an Alt-Fire, even in some of the earliest versions of the mod, was the Plasma Rifle. The Plasma Rifle's Alt-Fire deploys seven low-damage, large spread plasma bolts, compared to the normal three. The important difference though is that the shots all bounce several times before they detonate, doing damage on each bounce. In enclosed spaces they are remarkably deadly. This shot shows the bounce effect, though not as elegantly as I'd like, and more importantly doesn't highlight exactly how chaotically they can ricochet.

Flares and water

Any of you who have ever used a real flare in water (or near water) know that water doesn't do anything to stop flares from burning. Deus Ex, unfortunately, was of a decidedly different opinion, primarily due to a minor technical limitation that wasn't really worth working around. Fortunately for you, I have endless amounts of free time to waste. Once underwater flares now produce air bubbles, as shown by this screenshot. Don't you just feel better now?

Water interaction effects (3)

More water interaction effects, courtesy of the Boomstick. It's worth noting that while there are only 6 distinct splashes there, the weapon puts out more than that many at once. There are only 6 splashes due to an intentional limit in the splash effect code.

Some more on those water splash effects, this time with something that puts out a few more bullets at once. One of the unique weapons, as a matter of fact. For reference, at this point in the game it isn't possible to have picked it up just yet; I cheated for the sake of a screenshot.

Not everything in Shifter is entirely behind the scenes. Here's a little bit of code I added, well, because I could. Shooting into water will produce some reasonable-looking splash effects. Try not to spend too much time doing it just to look at the visuals. ;)

Here's a small screen showing JC listening to the "unknown party" in that tapped conversation I've restored. The name is rather cryptic but somehow familiar, isn't it? [Image captured by gfaqs user DX_Nathan]
